Very reminiscent of a mash-up of 1970′s pixies and child like anime style with a little 1970′s playboy porn added to the panache. I especially like the painting entitled “Dude looks like Jesus”. Baled Truck took six years to complete and is milled out of a solid block of aluminum. As Ray has pointed out, “Baled Truck is a sculpture that commemorates solidity and compression — as in memory, what seems assembled from the past is in reality carved from the present.” Also included in the show is Girl on Pony which is a relief etched out of another solid block of aluminum. Surreal and heavy with gravity. Check it out until April 18, 2015

A nice selection of sculptures from the Noguchi Foundation in Queens as well as some mass produced items such as tables an lamps that show the breath and width of work created during his career. Interesting piece entitled pregnant bird which is a lift of Constantin Brâncuși bird in space. He studied under Brancusi so it makes sense. These are two of my favorite sculptors of all time. First comprehensive retrospective of this artist who died in 2010. His work feels fresh now, even though some of it is a half century old. His style has influenced everyone from the abstract expressionists, graffiti stencil art, Damien Hirst, Xerox art, almost a complete run of what’s out there today. He was very prolific and created art in every possible medium from video, painting, sculpture and performance art, to other experimental ways of creating art making.
His art was very much of the times it was created in. If it was the 60’s and counterculture ways of living were in, he was there experimenting with the best of them. He was always trying to push the envelope of art making and art creating. Check this out.
Jakkai Siributr
“Transient Shelter”
Pictured above is Jakkai Siributr and Monica Welsh. There are 2 sections of his work. One set is earlier work that is more abstract and intricate set off separately from the main show of new work. Current pieces consist of hand stitched uniforms representative of Thailand and photographs of the artist wearing the same uniforms. Culturally these are common style of portraits from Thailand but there is an incongruity between the pacifism of Buddhist teachings and the military outfits that occupy the same space culturally. A beautiful and elegant show. Check it out.

The artist and her work. Very warm and gentle personality. Great to meet her in person. Her work is a beautiful mix of tantalizing imagery from India. Karen mixes the amazing architecture with exotic animals creating a remarkable tableau that is at the same time warm and a little unsettling. Check it out.
