New Year, New Openings! — Time to warm up with some new art and new art openings. Great group show by guest curator Noah Becker at Berry Campbell. Across the street Penelope Umbrico (an artist best known for appropriating images found on the Internet) has a cool show at Bruce Silverstein featuring cool photos of Grand Central and over a million shots of the moon from flickr that she made screen shots from. Internetistas will be there. Check it out!
Great Photo show this Thursday Night—Philip-Lorca diCorcia has a
large show opening Thursday night at David Zwirner Gallery on 19th street. The show is very much a synthesis of our times and should make for interesting conversations about good and evil and right and wrong. Check it out.
Little Nip in the Air-A couple of nice openings in Chelsea tonight. Wear a jacket. Freight + Volume has Ezra Johnson who creates and develops an ever changing cast of forms. In the entrance are sponge like clay creations that are shelved by the hundreds. Really dramatic exhibition. Check it out.
Street Art—And lots of it! Happening Thursday night on the West and East sides. RaiseArt has a show with a prolific stable of street artists working their magic, including Adam Dare and one of my favorites, Whisbe. Lazarides has brought Conor Harrington to the LES for a one month show featuring films, walls (Rivington and Suffolk) and a new suite of realistic paintings. That show opens on Saturday September 27th.

Unix Gallery
Always an eye-popping show at the Unix Gallery. Visual candy at every turn. Obtain Cherish Desire has a bunch of iconic pieces in the back of the gallery. Infront are some obsessively detailed portraits of a dollar bill and Andy Warhol. Check it out.
Hot and Humid, And that’s just the art—Insane baroque junk fest sculpture gang-up at Gagosian Gallery on 21st Street. Will be a fun night as long as the weather holds out. RaiseArt will be showcasing graffiti artist Paulie Nassarí work starting at 5pm. This will be LIVE and entertaining. Be there for the party! (1,2)
Fourth of July Weekend—Not a lot of openings tonight, but the Doosan Gallery has a fine photography opening on view. Constructions sites and Chance meetings at night, frame these two Korean photography artists work. Check it out, and have a great holiday weekend and enjoy some fireworks!

Great show of photography. I must say it is so refreshing to not have to look at photography behind glass. I think that glass over the image is killing the art form. This show respects the image. (plus it rephotographs well!) Great take on the commerce and monotony of Art Fairs. We’ve always wanted to do a series of “gallerists eating lunch” at the art fair, but this comes pretty close. Andy captures a cool connection with the art being showcased and the gallerists interacting with the art. Great show. Check it out.

Pictured above is Awol Erizku and Scott Frank art collector. Great show from a new MFA graduate from the Yale school of Art. Many of his class contemporaries were there to support his break-out show at Hasted Kraeutler. With a precise eye, he has managed to reference modern art history with his own contemporary experiences. He is making Art and Hip-Hop accessible to two different cultures that rarely cross or share a commonality. With his 7 story basketball hoops stacked vertically with the nets created out of gold chains and a Brooklyn Nets basketball sitting at top, there is no doubt the hip hop crew could relate to this piece. But with sly creative effect, he is referencing Donald Judd and sharing mental space with modern art world contemporaries. On the flip side with the Number 87 Duschamp basketball jersey, he’s taking a ready-made (very duchampian) and bringing the Hip Hop world into the modern art world with his ready made. Cool show. This kids on the move. Check it out.

Pictured above is Monica Welsh and China Marks. Her amazing “Tapestries of assembled pieces of fabric, sewing and story telling invite the viewer into a dimensional world that is viewable over and over. It was great to get the artist’ perspective on her creative process. Essentially she lets the fabric and visuals speak to her. She is just a vessel that helps navigate the pieces into existence. She listens carefully to what each piece says and creates text based art to add another layer of visual communication. Very unique and engaging. Check it out.
