Jonathan Levine Gallery
Last show at the 23rd Street Location
Uneven show with a very cool projection with found items at the back of the gallery. The hands that were painted were amazing. Check it out before it closes December 19th.
Space is the Place—Great show at Joshua Liner Gallery featuring oil on linen by Michael Kagan which showcases man’s moments of triumph over nature’s limits captured through iconic imagery as seen to the left. Also noteworthy is a cool show by Aïda Ruilova at Marlborough Chelsea featuring a 25-foot wide projection of a digitally transferred Super-16mm film, a large-scale inflatable, and a group of cut-paper collages. Cool night, check it out!

HELL YEA!— It seems like forever since we’ve had a chance to enjoy art. The galleries are open and ready to showcase the new! Every gallery is opening on September 10th, It’s hard to pick a spot, let alone a great show. Look around, the shows are everywhere! Our picks are highlighted in yellow. Best night of the year. Show of the night is Mike Kelly at Hauser and Wirth. Check your Krypton at the door and check it out!
Shrigley Doo—New David Shrigley gallery show at Anton Kern Gallery. His shows are always full of humor and insight. Sophisticated thinking with naive, child-like execution. His show is bound to make you smile :) Check it out! Also a couple of good sculpture shows at Metro pictures and Claire Oliver galleries. An as always a great party to be had at Freight & Volume with a show entitled Nest by Mi Ju.
Group Show
Oh the places we have been
Jonathan Levine Gallery
Nice group show featuring various artists from Paul Insect to Kevin Cyr. If you want to see a who’s who of modern outsider art right now, check out this show through May 2, 2015
Outsider Art Fair 2015
Chelsea NYC
3 Floors of galleries representing naive or self taught artists alive and deceased. From Mother Jones to the obsessive compulsive. Very cool work by artists who are obsessed to produce. Check out the fair until February 1, 2015
Claudia Comte
No Melon No Lemon
Gladstone Gallery
Very cool Branchusi-esque wooden sculptures set into vibrant black and yellow striped backgrounds that make you feel as if you’re part of a table top photoshoot staring up into the giganticness of each scene. That art truly dwarfs the viewer. Check it out through March 21, 2015
Snowmaggeden is Over!— Outsider Art Fair opens Thursday night and runs through the weekend. Always interesting work by artists who are possesed to produce. Strange and curious work that can be affordable. Other good shows will be some chain saw art at Gladstone and 7 sinks at Andrea Meislin gallery. Curious night indeed. Check it out.
Hot and Cold!— Chilly night this Thursday, but thank god there’s some nudes to warm up the night with at Steven Kashner Gallery. Stay warm and check it out.
Sam Friedman
Happy Place
Joshua Liner Gallery
Multiples and variations of lines, shapes, shocking colors and suns are typical of Sam Friedman’s abstract paintings at this show. Part of it feels very memphis in its style and experimentation. I’m feeling a strong 1980’s vibe here. Check it out through February 14, 2015.
