Marcel Dzama & Raymond Pettibon

Forgetting the Hand

David Zwirner Gallery

Raymond was there in person signing zones and skateboards and other ephemera for fans. He looked so sweaty and intense as if just being there was all he could muster through force of will. His exquisite corpse work with Marcel is very personal, intimate, and of a zine quality, It really refused the wall, which is pretty cool. The paper looked like it wanted to leave the wall and crawl home into the dank, dark quiet of a basement apartment. Check this out before it blows away…

Yayoi Kusama

Give Me Love

Obliteration Room

Every Yayoi show here at Zwirner is epic. So cool that they brought the Obliteration room from Australia to NYC. Day one, and the white walls of the suburban tract home are already getting covered with dots. The staff is a little controlling in the process, but such a cool and fun execution of her work. I feel like she is so much of a better conceptual artist than an executional artist. This show rocks. Bring your kids, they’ll have a blast! Through June 13th 2015.

Philip-Lorca diCorcia

East of Eden

Reflecting the down times of the economy post 2008 market crash, Philip-Lorca diCorcia references the biblical book of genesis showcasing a pervasive sense of disillusionment. Photography looks great especially with no annoying glass to interfere with the viewing of the images. I which more photography shows were presented this way.

Lisa Yuskavage

David Zwirner Gallery

Amazing paintings that reference historical painting styles and epochs. Very reminiscent of a mash-up of 1970′s pixies and child like anime style with a little  1970′s playboy porn added to the panache. I especially like the painting entitled “Dude looks like Jesus”. Check it out now through June 13, 2015.

Dude Looks Like Jesus—Lisa Yuskavage has a cool show which references past historical painting ideas with her own pixie-ish waifish spin on it in many hues. Looks like a fun show and a great opening. Berry Campbell has a great show by Syd Solomon showing works from the 1970’s with bold provocative use of color and application of paint. Check it out!

Mamma Andersson

Behind the Curtain

David Zwirner Gallery

At first, I didn’t think I would like this work, but gradually it began to grow on me. There is an otherworldly ness about it and even though it looks very clumsily put together there is a very powerful structure underneath. Everything sits weightily on its plain on the canvas, everything has a heaviness. Very unique and very scandinavian sensibility. There are 2 large murals that accompany the show which make you feel like a doll in a doll house. Definitely worth checking out. On view though February 14, 2015

Snowy and LOTS of New Shows opening for The New Year!—Fun show of the night will be a solo Para show at Jonathan Levine Gallery on 23rd. Diana Thater explores the dung beetle, the species uses the Milky Way to orientate itself at night, currently the only insect known to do so. Should be worth checking out.
