Haroshi

Haroshi takes used skateboard decks and re-lamintes the layers of the decks to creae re-imagined items from the materials. Everything from Carousel Horses, to car crashes to typography all rendered exquisitely in wood. On the backside of the typography you can view the construction techniques used to create the pieces. John Miller

Here in the Real World

Mary Boone Gallery

Game show paintings  from the Price is right show juxtaposed with blown-up jpegs of the televised show, reveal what at first appears to be joy by the painted portraits of the people from the game show, but ultimately reveal an intense sadness when stripped out and isolated. Check it out through February 28, 2015

Charles Ray

Matthew Marks Gallery

Baled Truck took six years to complete and is milled out of a solid block of aluminum. As Ray has pointed out, “Baled Truck is a sculpture that commemorates solidity and compression — as in memory, what seems assembled from the past is in reality carved from the present.” Also included in the show is Girl on Pony which is a relief etched out of another solid block of aluminum. Surreal and heavy with gravity. Check it out until April 18, 2015

Isamu Noguchi

Variations

Pace Gallery

A nice selection of sculptures from the Noguchi Foundation in Queens as well as some mass produced items such as tables an lamps that show the breath and width of work created during his career. Interesting piece entitled pregnant bird which is a lift of Constantin Brâncuși bird in space. He studied under Brancusi so it makes sense. These are two of my favorite sculptors of all time. Check it out through March 21, 2015

Britton Tolliver

Weird Attic

Joshua Liner Gallery

Deeply layered paint that creates a tiled effect to the visual almost as if they are little thin mints that you can eat off the canvas. Abstracted and abstracting. Check it out through March 28th 2015.

The Mean Heart of Winter!— It’s rough outside, but that doesn’t stop the heart beat of art to keep pumping. Jacob Lewis Gallery has an inaugural exhibition by How and Nosm at his new gallery. Intense works on canvas should prove to be the show stopper of the night. Stop by and check it out! Other good shows include Britton Tolliver at Joshua Liner Gallery and Haroshi wood carvings at Jonathan Levine Gallery. Stay warm out there!

Happy Valentines Day Weekend!— Julie Saul Gallery has the first state side exhibition of the experimental video and still artist Adam Magyar—definitely worth checking out. Danziger Gallery has the original
photographer that was appropriated by Richard Prince. Jim Krantz’s
photographs are Iconic representations of the west and are easily
recognizable. The architect Ron Arad’s “Pressed Flower” sculptures, made up of compressed Fiat 500s in varying colors mounted on the gallery’s walls should be pretty cool to see (what can’t this guy do?). Check it out!

Claudia Comte

No Melon No Lemon

Gladstone Gallery

Very cool Branchusi-esque wooden sculptures set into vibrant black and yellow striped backgrounds that make you feel as if you’re part of a table top photoshoot staring up into the giganticness of each scene. That art truly dwarfs the viewer. Check it out through March 21, 2015
