Shag-a-riffic—We skipped spring and went straight to summer, SMH. Anyway there will be a fantastic shagarific show at Jonathan Levine Gallery featuring the hep cat feel of the late 1960’s painting and illustration. I’m sure everyone will be in a good mood/vibe. For some amazing photo-realistic paintings, check out Melodie Provenzano at the Nancy Margolis Gallery. Have a hep night!

Richard Pousette-Dart

1960’s through 1980’s Survey

PACE

The youngest abstract expressionist of the group created very geometric artwork that still has the power to transfix the viewer and draw them in with the repetitive brush stroke so evenly placed. Very Op-Arty in its presentation. Cool show, check it out through February 14, 2015

Fred Wilson

10 Year Retrospective

PACE NYC

African American born in the Bronx. The work deals directly with race and it’s place in American Culture. The flag paintings are really cool. They are from very colorful african countries but have been stripped of their true colors. Very provocative and insightful work. Intense. Check it out.

Terazzo

Pace NYC’

The Chinese artist deeply layers the paint in a very abstract way. Very formulaic and controlled. Also very drippy and deep at the same time. Mesmerizing. Check it out.

2 amazing sculptures that are created out of identical pieces that create a very different original whole. The 8 card towers are comprised of many million of 3x5" cards glued together into towers. The other sculpture is created out of plastic rods cut at different lengths. Together they feel like some kind of growing life forms emanating from under the sea. Truly spectacular. Check it out.

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Still Life

Pace

Stunning gelatin silver prints taken of the American Museum of Natural History. The slighting is so flat and even, you really lose the sense of reality. Not really sure wether it is real or not. These are very large scale prints and are hung very high so that you are always looking up. Check it out.
