There’s A Riot Goin’ On
Freight And Volume
Painter of text which include lyrics, poetry, jokes that create iconic figures of 1970’s popular culture. Painstakingly created, these epically scaled portraits draw you in with their words, but reveal a larger image from a far. Very cool. Check it out.
James Walsh
Barry Campbell Gallery
Luscious canvasses with massive amounts of acrylic paint in a super thick impasto style. These painterly pieces draw you in and harken back to the abstract expressionist era. You can get lost in the paint—which is the whole purpose. Check it out!
Keith Haring
Paintings and Tarps from the 1980’s
Very graphic paintings in his preeminent style. A great chance to see visuals you probably haven’t seen before. AIDS themed paintings and tarpaulins. It always warms the heart to see his work, but this is a lot more provocative subject matter that ultimately caused his death at 31. Large and powerful. Check it out.
Larry Clark
they thought i were but i aren’t anymore…
Luhring Augustine Gallery
The filmmaker Larry Clark know for seminal movie “Kids” about illegal drug use, underage sex and violence has a huge show documenting his many collages, photographs paintings and even a box of drugs entitled “This isn’t going to go to well…” Lots of dicks and adult subject matter, very lurid. Check it out without your children.
Walton Ford
Paul Kasmin Gallery
Amazing watercolorist in the style of the Audobon era, but speaking in a voice and perspective of the animal in a “How did I get her?” type thought. The stories at the bottom of these immense watercolors tells the stories. Don’t forget to read them as it really brings the images alive. Check it out.
Tara Donovan
Pace
2 amazing sculptures that are created out of identical pieces that create a very different original whole. The 8 card towers are comprised of many million of 3x5" cards glued together into towers. The other sculpture is created out of plastic rods cut at different lengths. Together they feel like some kind of growing life forms emanating from under the sea. Truly spectacular. Check it out.
MFA— A chance to see future painting famers at Nancy Margolis Gallery. 10 young painters out to prove something. Also at Berry Campbell is a very painterly show (as in really thick) that would be great to see close-up. Check it out.
