Andy Freeberg

Art Fare

Andrea Meislin Gallery

Great show of photography. I must say it is so refreshing to not have to look at photography behind glass. I think that glass over the image is killing the art form. This show respects the image. (plus it rephotographs well!) Great take on the commerce and monotony of Art Fairs. We’ve always wanted to do a series of “gallerists eating lunch” at the art fair, but this comes pretty close. Andy captures a cool connection with the art being showcased and the gallerists interacting with the art. Great show. Check it out.

Bloodflames Revisited

Curated by Phong Bui

Paul Kasmin Gallery

Really cool summer show that riffs off of a 1947 seminal show whereby the curator hung all the art in very off-kilter perspectives to create new ways of seeing the art. Phong ties that as a starting point and creates a elevated orange path over a sea of hay/stra that is very strong smelling to create a new way of seeing current art. Fun summer show. Check it out.

Jeff Koons

A Retrospective

Whitney Museum of American Art

Jeff Koons show has something for everyone, no matter what your taste is. And I think that is the point of this whole exhibition. Jeff Koons mines popular culture and feeds it back the icons and totems of their collective “tastes” and shares it in exquisite form, without passing judgement on whether or not these works should be considered as high-brow or low-brow. Tastey Show. Check it out.

Jeff Koons

A Retrospective—Banality Series

Whitney Museum of American Art

In one of the rooms, the Whitney as created this long, series of pedestals that you can walk along on both sides of the sculptures and see his Banality Series as a set. Very cool party of the retrospective. Jeff Koons is always playing with cultures’ sense of taste and these low brow fetishistic type objects have been raised to a high level. It is especially great to see the Michael Jackson and Bubbles the chimp sculpture. Jeff Koons has said that if he could have been anyone else in the world, he would have been Michael Jackson. This piece was created at the height of his popularity. Check it out.

Jerry Kearns

RRRGGHH!!!

Mike Weiss Gallery

These full scale—huge—paintings really capture the pop art sensibility, They mine the good vs. evil dialog inserting plenty of villains and shoot ‘em ups with graphic cartoon type layer on top. Very visually arresting and fun. Check it out.

Crash

Broken English

Jonathan Levine Gallery

Pictured above is John “Crash” Matos and Monica Welsh at the gallery opening for Broken English. Amazing show with very tight canvasses cropped to contain the frenetic, yet very pop-y sensibilities of the canvases. Bright colors and a very cool 80’s vibe that feels timeless. These would be great pieces to own. Be sure to check out the Museum of New York City’s show entitled City as Canvas. It features Crash’s work as well as a huge trove of seminal early NYC graffiti from the collection of Martin Wong. Check it out.

1980’s Graffiti is Having it’s Moment— Crash is showing at Jonathan Levine Gallery on 23rd street. A fully painted original mini cooper is on display, while the City Museum of New York on 103rd and 5th Ave. is showing the collection of Martin Wong, an early 70’s and 80’s collector of everything graffiti back in the day. Two great shows that highlight what started it all. Get smart, hit the streets!
